Sempervivum - Budai Mountains

I received a Sempervivum globiferum Budai Mountains from Mountain Crest Gardens in February 2026. According to Mountain Crest:

"Sempervivum globiferum f/ Budai Mountains: A fun form of a naturally occurring species from Hungary. It's quite petite, but makes up for it with an absolutely prolific mass of new offsets each year. As with other members of this species, the offsets are small and spherical. They easily fall off the mother rosette and roll away to root. In only a few seasons, a single plant can spread into an immense colony."

There were five offsets (buds) on the plant when it was received. There also were two loose in the box and I put them into the pot. One can be seen in the first photo in the lower-right corner.

Feb. 15, 2026. Eventually these little purple and green buds will fall off the plant and roll away to become new plants.

Care Guide: Sempervivums need at least six hours of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form, but may need to be shaded during the hottest part of the day. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They need to be allowed to dry out completely between waterings to avoid root rot. Sempervivums are very cold-hardy perennials, with Budai Mountains rated for Zone 5, -20F.

The Budai or Buda Mountains are a range of hills in and around Budapest, Hungary. The highest peak Nagy-Kopasz is 1,834 feet, which is less than one-third of the altitude of my greenhouse (5,715 feet) where the plant pictured above is currently located. It seems to be handling the altitude just fine.
