Sempervivum

Sempervivum - A cold-hardy group of succulent plants known for their rosette-shaped leaves and propagation through offsets. Also known as "Hens & Chicks" for the central rosette (hen) surrounded by offsets (chicks). These chicks can be left to form tidy clusters or removed to share and transplant. After the hen flowers in about three years, it will die, leaving the chicks to take over. The following varieties were located in the greenhouse in mid-February just before six of them were taken out by frost just a few days after this image was taken. Although Sempervivums are hardy, they were sitting in small pots on a bench and perhaps weren't dry enough.
