I received a Sempervivum heuffelii Cherry Glow from Mountain Crest Gardens in February 2026. According to Mountain Crest:
"Sempervivum heuffelii 'Cherry Glow' (Smith): A sweet red rosette with a green heart. Its leaves are lined with a fringe of cilia and the rosette deepens to purple in winter. S. heuffelii are super frost hardy and drought tolerant. They thrive outdoors year-round and hold vibrant colors through the seasons. To produce vegetative offsets, a mother plant will divide and develop into a neat cluster of new rosettes. These rosettes can be cut apart and transplanted or left to cluster."
The one I received had a rough ride from California with several broken and lost leaves. Its bad luck continued when I moved it to the greenhouse and it froze when the temperature dropped to 6. Although Sempervivums are said to be hardy to at least -20, this was in a small pot and perhaps wasn't dry enough to survive.

Care Guide: Sempervivums need at least six hours of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form, but may need to be shaded during the hottest part of the day. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They need to be allowed to dry out completely between waterings to avoid root rot. Sempervivums are very cold-hardy perennials, with Cherry Glow rated for Zone 4, -30F.
