Sempervivum heuffelii - Orion

I received a Sempervivum heuffelii Orion from Mountain Crest Gardens in February 2026. According to Mountain Crest:

"Sempervivum heuffelii 'Orion': A red and purple colony of rosettes with firm leaves. The edges of these leaves feature silvery cilia that can give the plant a frosted appearance. These are excellent for adding interest to cold garden beds."

The one they sent me is two rosettes back-to-back. I moved it to the greenhouse and was frost damaged when the temperature dropped to 6. One rosette seems to be beyond hope, but the other still shows some signs of life. Although Sempervivums are said to be hardy to at least -20, this was in a small pot and perhaps wasn't dry enough to (completely) survive.

Care Guide: Sempervivums need at least six hours of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form, but may need to be shaded during the hottest part of the day. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They need to be allowed to dry out completely between waterings to avoid root rot. Sempervivums are very cold-hardy perennials, with Orion rated for Zone 4, -30F.
